News and European public opinion: the role of the journalist

Europe won’t truly exist until there is a European public opinion. Much is invested in the education programmes for European citizenry but news on the Old Continent still follows national (if not nationalistic) lines. News from the rest of Europe remains foreign news. No unified European traditional media news space exists and online news won’t be sufficient in itself. Al Jazeera has succeeded in stimulating the development of a broad and relatively homogenous public opinion in the Arab world. What obstacles prevent the emergence of a European equivalent, capable of expressing an authoritative European view on issues of importance? Are European journalists and media companies willing to take on the challenge? Should the European Union take the lead? Or should it be left to market forces and the web to fill the gap?
