Open licensing & Creative Commons: solution or problem for crisis-hit media?

Italy is one of the top five countries for the number of online publications with Creative Commons licenses but the traditional publishing industry doesn’t seem to have noticed yet. In addition to creating more online traffic and allowing members of the public to republish an article (citing only the source), CC online gives new life to old material with clear benefits to all concerned. Yet the media and publishing industries don’t appear to consider online CC licenses as long-term assets. Why? Laziness, lack of a coherent strategy or an anachronistic fixation on copyright in its narrowest form? Can greater use of CC licences be anything other than positive for the spread of culture and the safeguarding of authors’ rights?
