Begging, thieving, work-shy gypsies. Or so some parts of the Italian media would put it. It doesn’t require a profound knowledge of history to link prejudice with ignorance. A better understanding of the world of Romany citizens is a necessary pre-condition for balanced reporting on their particular social niche. A pressing issue, given the recent policies of the French government, the war of words with the European Union and the current tensions in Italy.
