Humanitarian organizations and the press. A rocky relationship?

The media devotes a huge amount of time and space to crime news and political rumours. And relatively little to important global issues such as famine, human rights, emergencies, development projects. For the first time, the international organizations operating in Italy will all get together to consider the following: why do the antics of home-grown political toe-rags matter more than 1,000 refugees or 20,000 children dying every day? This is a unique opportunity to reply to the key question: what’s news? Who selects what is to become news and in consequence what (or who) must remain invisible? And with what criteria?
