Michael Steen

head of media relations European Central Bank

Michael Steen is head of media relations of the European Central Bank. In that role he has pushed for simpler external communication and set up a small team creating digital content for the ECB’s website, aimed at the general public.

Michael was born in 1974 in the UK, and grew up in Belgium and the UK. After studying German and Russian at Cambridge he joined Reuters news agency and worked as a foreign correspondent in Moscow, Kiev and Central Asia (based in Kazakhstan), as well as Frankfurt. He left Reuters in 2007 to work until 2013 for the Financial Times, first as Netherlands correspondent, then Assistant News Editor on the main news desk in London and finally back in Frankfurt as Eurozone economics correspondent and bureau chief.
