Over the last couple of years we have been witnessing a new chapter in the ever-changing relationship between platforms and publishers. While Google and Facebook offer generous support to many news outlets during the pandemic, more and more countries force the large intermediaries into negotiations with media outlets. At the same time, the two giants introduced their own licensing programmes and new corresponding products via Google News Showcase and Facebook News. Their dominance in the advertising market is also increasingly being criticised, and media outlets are striving for independence from Google's and Facebook's Ad Tech. It's time to discuss the state of play between publishers and platforms. The panel will provide perspectives from four different countries: France, Germany, Switzerland and the US.
