A hands on session for interested (aspiring) journalists on how to use open-source data on environment and climate reporting. At Bellingcat, we are exploring novel tools and data sets on collecting data relating to environmental changes, be it from oil spill tracking, deforestation, air pollution to illegal mining. This workshop will guide participants to ready-to-use data sets on natural resources, earth observation tools to special scripts that can be used in Google Earth Engine that help quantify and visualize environmental changes. The workshop will provide a brief introduction into remote sensing, explanation on climate-linked data tracking as well as sources for relevant climate information platforms. This outcome will be relevant for journalist with an interest in accessing climate and environmental data, visualizing environmental impacts for articles or long-term investigations.
