
Alberto Godioli is Associate Professor at the University of Groningen (the Netherlands). His research focuses on promoting a fair, context-sensitive approach to humor and satire in free speech jurisprudence, based on insights from human rights law as well as the humanities and social sciences.
He is the director of ForHum: Forum for Humor and the Law – an international platform for lawyers, scholars and practitioners interested in the nexus of humor and freedom of expression.
In dialogue with experts from UNESCO, the European Court of Human Rights, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and several free speech organizations, Alberto recently coordinated the publication of a toolkit for judges and legal professionals, titled What’s in a Joke? Assessing Humor in Free Speech Jurisprudence (ForHum / Columbia Global Freedom of Expression, 2025).
