Kai Falkenberg is General Counsel for The Guardian in the United States, where she leads legal strategy across editorial, regulatory, and business operations for one of the most widely read news sites in the country.

With more than two decades of experience in media law, she advises newsrooms operating under increasing legal, political, and economic pressure, including defending journalists against defamation claims, subpoenas, and other efforts to chill investigative reporting. Falkenberg is a recognized advocate for press freedom and journalists’ rights, with deep expertise spanning First Amendment law, newsroom ethics, labor relations, and public policy.

Before joining The Guardian, she served as chief legal officer for several major digital media companies and as Acting Commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment, overseeing the nation’s largest municipal broadcast network. She has taught media law at Columbia Law School for more than a decade, focusing on the evolving legal frameworks shaping global media and digital platforms.
