Miguel Castro is senior officer, Global Media Partnerships at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. At the foundation since 2012, Miguel helps define and manage the foundation’s global partnerships and media and communications grant-making global portfolio. This include developing projects with media organizations, international broadcasters, digital/social media and documentary in dozens of countries, including projects with Al Jazeera, BBC World Service, Le Monde, El Pais and the Financial Times, among many others.
Prior to this, Miguel was special projects manager, Media Program at the Open Society Foundations where he joined in 2004. A journalist by training and education, he has worked as a radio, print, and ENG reporter, and was press secretary to a senior public official. He has also worked as a professional photographer in the United States and was visiting professor of Digital Media and Advocacy Communications at IE’s School of Human Sciences and Technology. He focuses currently on improving media and communications measurement and impact analysis and is working with institutions such as the Media Impact Project at USC Annenberg and the Center for Social Media Research at Peking University.
