Caroline Muscat is the co-founder and editor of The Shift News, an online news portal launched in November 2017 as an investigative news outlet to address the gap in independent journalism in Malta.

She has over 20 years of experience in the field. She was the former News Editor of The Times of Malta and The Sunday Times of Malta, the country’s leading newspaper, and one of its main investigative journalists. She exposed the Gaffarena scandal in 2015, which led to the resignation of then Parliamentary Secretary Michael Falzon and resulted in an investigation by the Auditor General and a court case to recover public assets, which was won. Caroline maintained her focus on investigative journalism exposing scandals such as the one on the ITS site in St George’s Bay involving the Seabank Group in 2016. She played a critical role in securing partnership for The Times of Malta with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists on the Panama Papers. Following the ensuing scandals, involving members of government, she resigned to assist the Opposition’s campaign against corruption. Caroline also covered issues such as abuse in MEP campaign funding, food safety concerns, women and refugee rights and the exploitation of prisoners, among others.

Her work has received a number of awards, including Best News Journalist and Best Environmental Journalist in Malta in 2015, to top awards received by the European Commission on work against discrimination. In 2017, she received an award for her defence of press freedom by the Italian journalists’ association Articolo 21 as well as the Pimental Fonseca Prize.
