Emma Lupano

University of Milan

Emma Lupano is a postdoc researcher at the Department of Language Mediation and Intercultural Communication at the University of Milan. She holds a PhD from La Sapienza University of Rome in Civilization of Asia and Africa (2011) with a dissertation on Chinese freelance journalists, for which she received the Maria Grazia Cutuli International Journalism Award. She has been the coordinator of the European University Centre at Peking University, contract professor teaching Chinese media at Università degli Studi di Milano and visiting fellow at the China Media Project of the University of Hong Kong.

A professional journalist, she has worked for more than 15 years for press, radio and online media both in Italian and in English. She has been a freelance correspondent from China for four years, a reporter at the Olympic Games in Beijing with the Olympic News Service as well as the first Italian journalist to work at the People’s Daily Online in Beijing, the mouthpiece of China’s Communist Party. Since 2009 she has written a column on editorials published by Chinese media for AGI.

She is the author of Ho servito il popolo cinese, Media e potere nella Cina di oggi (2012) and editor of Media in Cina oggi (2010). She has also published book chapters and articles on China’s contemporary media and soft power.
