Martina Caironi, born in 1989, underwent the amputation of her left leg at the hip in 2007 following a car accident. In 2010 she received her first prosthesis to enable her to run. She has won Italian, European and world titles, including the gold medal in the 100m T42 category at the Paralympics in London (2012) and Rio de Janeiro (2016), where she also won the silver medal in the long jump. She holds the world record in both the 100 and 200 meters in the T42 category. In 2015 she won the Paralympic Athlete Award awarded by the Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.
