Algorithms are the new gatekeepers. They are having an impact what people know about the world, which information they see and what they do not see. This is also a challenge for journalists and media organizations. We will discuss which knowledge media organizations need to build in the newsroom to cover such issues, but also how news organizations can use algorithms in a responsible and transparent way. Two aspects will be important for this panel: How can news organizations ensure that the algorithms they are using or creating do not have unintended side effects and also which new skill-sets are necessary in today's news rooms to be able to have an informed debate about the societal challenges of algorithmic decisions.
