Carlo Meletti

National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology

Carlo Meletti is a geologist who for over 30 years has dealth with historical seismology, seismic hazard assessment, risk reduction and earthquake education. Since 2003 he has been the head technologist of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) - Pisa Office and since 2013 the director of the INGV Seismic Hazard Center, in charge of updating the seismic hazard model for Italy. He is one of the authors of the national seismic hazard map (MPS04), which became the legal reference point for the seismic reclassification of Italian municipalities and on which the technical regulations for NTC08 buildings are based.

He was a researcher of the National Group for the Defence against Earthquakes CNR (1990-1998), then at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Pisa (1998-2002). He has participated in major national and European projects in the field of seismic hazard from 1988 onwards. He participated, among others, in the international project GSHAP (Global Program Seismic Hazard Assessment, 1994-1999) as part of the UN Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction, the European project Neries (Network of Research Infrastructures for European Seismology, 2006- 2009), the European project SHARE (seismic hazard harmonization in Europe, 2009-2012) which issued in 2013 the seismic hazard model of Europe and the Mediterranean, of which he is the author.
