Daniel Rye

freelance photojournalist

Daniel Rye is a Danish freelance photojournalist. In 2013 he was kidnapped by the Islamic state while reporting on the refugee crisis in Northern Syria and held hostage for 398 days. Once he was released in the summer of 2014 he returned to his profession as a photographer straight away. Daniel went from being a photographer telling other people stories to being the story himself. That journey has changed his way of looking at journalism, in particular international reporting. This change can be seen in his latest work, a photography book entitled While we wait (Mens vi venter) about the coming climate refugee crisis. Daniel is also a former elite gymnast & teacher. The story about Daniel's kidnapping has been told in the book The ISIS hostage by Puk Damsgaard.
