Giuliana Sgrena

Il Manifesto

Giuliana Sgrena has been writing for the daily Il Manifesto since 1988. She has produced numerous reports from war zones, including Algeria, Somalia and Afghanistan. She dealt in particular with the condition of women in Islam. In February 2005 she was kidnapped while in Baghdad, being freed after a month by the Italian secret services in dramatic circumstances that led to her wounding and the killing of Nicola Calipari, a member of the Italian security services. She was appointed Knight of the Order of Merit of the Republic by then Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
