Matt Kelly

founder and editor-in-chief The New European

Matt Kelly is founder and editor-in-chief of The New European, a weekly print newspaper and website launched as a pop-up publishing experiment in the UK in the days following the 2016 Brexit Referendum. Today, the New European is backed by investors including ex-NYT CEO Mark Thompson, FT editor Lionel Barber, Bild editor Tanit Koch and Transferwise founder Taavet Hinrikus. Following its innovative co-ownership campaign in the summer of 2022 raised more than £1million investment from 2,200 co-owners, valuing the start-up at more than £6m. In contrast to many of its competitor set, The New European operates for profit and is on track to break even this year, with subscriptions growing at 40% throughout 2022. It sells no advertising and receives no grants, relying solely on subscription and retail revenue.

Previously, Kelly worked as international director of Barcelona-based news design agency Sol361, during which time he shaped the digital transformation of Argentina's largest news title Clarín. He has held a variety of senior positions at the UK's Daily Mirror, including five years as Publisher of Mirror Group Digital.
