Alexandra Foederl-Schmid

Israel correspondent Süddeutsche Zeitung

Alexandra Föderl-Schmid is Israel correspondent of the Süddeutsche Zeitung and former co-publisher and editor-in-chief of the print and online edition of the Austrian daily Der Standard until 2017. The first woman in Austrian history to have held such a post, she previously reported extensively on European issues, including the wars in former Yugoslavia and EU enlargement.

She was born 1971 in Haslach, Austria, and is a graduate of the Wels Journalism School. She gained her master degree at the University of Salzburg followed by a doctorate in Communications Studies, also from the University of Salzburg. She has reported extensively on European issues, mainly from a base in Germany. Alexandra is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford.
