Data editor Dorothy Otieno leads Newsplex, the Nation Media Group data journalism desk. In the past four years Newsplex has told award-winning, insightful and impactful in-depth data-driven stories. Among them is the Deadly Force Database and series that clinched the best Data Visualisation award at the 2017 Digital Media Africa Awards. The same year, the team also won the English-language category of the 2017 African Fact-Checking Awards for its Before You Vote series, which fact-checked claims made by election candidates and government officials ahead of the 2017 General Election.
Prior to joining the largest media group in East and Central Africa, she was a Data Journalism Team Lead at Internews, an international media capacity-building organisation, where she trained and mentored journalists on data journalism. An award-winning journalist, Dorothy spent years specialising in science and human rights issues at The Standard.
