Mohammed Bassiki is an investigative journalist with more than 15 years of experience in Syrian affairs and the Middle East. He is the founder and executive director of SIRAJ.

Mohammed’s work has focused heavily on public spending, financial investigations, budgets, and corporations. He produces and publishes collaborative and participatory investigations about Syria to enhance transparency, create accountability, and strengthen laws in times of uncertainty.

Mohammed has collaborated with OCCRP, Lighthouse Reports, The Guardian, Finance Uncovered, and many more. He has been nominated for numerous international awards, including the 2024 True Story Award in Bern/ switzerland, and 2023 HostWriter Prize, the 2022 Daphne Caruana Galizia Journalism Prize, and several awards from the International Center for Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). In 2022, the Global Network for Investigative Journalism (GIJN) named his investigation about the illicit phosphate trade between Syria and the EU as the best story in the Middle East that year. Mohammed is an ICIJ member and holds a diploma from the Swedish Institute/Leader Lab.
