Ramzy Alwakeel

news editor HuffPost UK

Ramzy Alwakeel is HuffPost UK News Editor, helping oversee the site’s news output throughout the UK. Ramzy joined HuffPost UK in November 2019.

Prior to HuffPost UK, Ramzy was editor of the Islington Gazette and Hackney Gazette (and, latterly, the Ham&High series and Kilburn Times). He refocused the titles on original investigative reporting and helped restore the trust and respect of their communities, overseeing campaigns like The Hidden Homeless, which won the Paul Foot Award and an Amnesty Award. Ramzy also commissioned and edited the Islington Gazette’s investigation into a former mayor’s secret pro-paedophile history, resulting in the establishment of an independent review by the council. Under Ramzy’s editorship the newspapers published special editions on climate change, knife crime and gender inequality, resurrected their outreach work with local schools, and earned praise in Parliament and at Jeremy Corbyn’s Alternative Mactaggart Lecture for their investigative work.

His book on the Pet Shop Boys, Smile If You Dare, was published in 2016 by Repeater Books to praise from The Wire and the Times Literary Supplement.
