Deepa Fernandes

Deepa Fernandes is an award-winning journalist who has reported from over a dozen countries, from Peru to Cuba to East Timor. Fernandes has reported from inside rebel-controlled prisons during a Haitian coup, slum villages in Mumbai, and immigration jails across the U.S.

Fernandes is currently an Early Childhood correspondent. She began this beat as a staff reporter at Southern California Public Radio, KPCC, and now continues as a Reporting Fellow for Early Childhood issues at Pacific Oaks College in California. Fernandes has won numerous awards for her reporting including the L.A. Press Club's Radio Journalist of the Year for the last three years in a row, 2017, 2018 and 2019. She won an Emmy in 2018 and dozens of other awards. In 2012 Fernandes was a Knight Journalism fellow at Stanford University and she has an MA from Columbia University.
