Alinda Vermeer is the acting CEO of Media Legal Defence Initiative (MLDI), a London-based international NGO that provides legal defence to journalists around the world. MLDI currently work in 54 countries, providing emergency financial and technical legal support to individual journalists, pursuing strategic litigation, and providing grants to partner organisations to develop national media defence centres. MLDI has a 70% case success rate and 71% of the journalists they support continue to report. Between 2008 and 2018, their support helped journalists avoid over 285 years of detention and over £400 million in damages. Alinda is a qualified lawyer, admitted to the bar in the Netherlands, and represents journalists at international and regional human rights forums.
